Tone of Voice

About This Project

TONE OF VOICE This project involved creating three distinct tones of voice: formal, casual, and funny, with a source of our choice not exceeding 150 words, excluding links, and stripped of images. We used Microsoft Word tracking markups so the instructor could see our changes.

I use Blackbaud products in my current workplace, so I selected my source text from the About Us menu on their website. I underlined text to indicate links.

Original Text

FORMAL Blackbaud uses a borderline formal tone of voice in the original text, so this version required minimal changes. I spelled out contractions, kept the passive sentence structure, and increased the formality, especially with adjectives.

Formal Version

CASUAL I enjoyed this transformation. Goodbye, passive structure and long sentences. Hello, plain English!

Casual Version

FUNNY I didn’t want heavy-handed humor in this version. It isn’t the front row of a Gallagher show. Instead, I seasoned it lightly, even down to the links. It was my favorite of the three versions to work with.

Funny Version

This project earned exemplary tone of voice creation from the instructor.
