The past two weekends reminded me of the marathon newspaper deadlines at UT Tyler. My University of North Texas tech comm team pieced together our content evaluation document. The first weekend we submitted a draft, and the second weekend, the final copy.
This project was a bit difficult since we were collaborating remotely. I often do my best work while under the gun. It can be stressful trying to compose a major paper with other people, especially when your team barely knows one another. But we did it. This time I didn’t have to sleep under my desk rather than make a long late-night commute home.
Our first drafts had a few kinks, including a faulty executive summary, too much focus on the client’s site design rather than its content, and a top-heavy technical section (the latter was completely my fault). We had solid spreadsheet data but didn’t refer to it enough in the draft.
This paper is twenty percent of our final grade, so I hope we addressed all these draft sins to our instructor’s satisfaction and created a document our client will be happy to use. The most difficult part of this project was getting all our schedules aligned days before the assignment due date.
The next stage of this project is the strategic content road map and it is an individual project with an audience of one—our instructor. This report counts for another twenty percent of our semester grade and has four required elements: an introduction, a strengths/weaknesses/opportunities/threats (SWOT) analysis, strategic directions recommendations, and my conclusion of what obstacles the client may face based on the suggestions in our team’s report.
Two major projects equal forty percent of my final grade.
